Make Your Own Soap And Candles Employing An Uncomplicated Do It Yourself Method

Posted by Sammy Burke on Jun 2, 2010 in Crafts

Making soap and candles used to be one of the weekly chores of the household. When you actually go to make your own soap and candles you will find out it is not all that easy and takes a great deal of time. It was also very dangerous because of the materials that were used to make them. It is fun to make your own as a hobby and do it once in awhile but just think if this was something that had to be done on a monthly or weekly basis. You will then appreciate modern soaps you can just get in the grocery store and electricity that provides our light in the modern age. You can make your own soap and candles as a hobby instead of a way of life.

It is fun to make candles and soap but you will need to pick up some basic equipment. A heat source is needed. In the early days soap and candles would have been made over a fire outside but we have some modern conveniences to use they did not have. The best thing to use is an electric hot plate but if you have an electric stove it will work well too. Make sure to never mix your pans for soap making with your pans for candle making. Never mix those pans with ones you use to cook dinner in either. You might get a frothy mouth and horrible taste if you do. Buy old pans from a second hand store and keep them hidden away unless you are making soap or candles. A necessity is a double boiler and you should be able to find an old one but if you do not use an empty metal can for coffee. Place it inside a pot of water or fill an old electric skillet with water and place it on the surface.

You will need more supplies to make candles and can find them online or at a craft shop. Pick up some wax, some wicks to light the candles, a mold, fragrance to add to the candles to make them smell good, and color for candles to make them anything but white. Molds can be purchased but you can also use small plastic lined cups or paper milk cartons that have a waxy inside. If you want to make pillar candles or tapers you will have to get the metal molds which take a bit of experience to use right.

A double boiler is used to prevent the wax from burning. If you put it in a double boiler it will not burn because the heat from the boiling water in the pot underneath is what melts the wax not the flame of the burner. You need to be careful with wax because it is very flammable. You rarely have a flair up when using a double boiler. Another safe way to melt wax is to put water into an electric skillet and let it come to a simmer. Put the wax in an old coffee can and put it in the water that is in the skillet. The wax will melt slowly but you will continue to be safe and sound.

Use paraffin wax to make your first candles as it is easier to work with. There are many different types of wax but this type melts readily and you do not have to do anything special with it. Find paraffin wax in food stores where they keep the canning supplies. It can also be found in any craft store. Paraffin usually comes in a box in either bars or in sheets that are about an inch in thickness. Just place them in the top of the double boiler or in the coffee can and let them melt. Make sure the whole bar or sheet is in the container so there is no chance of any dripping down on to the burner as this could cause it to catch on fire.

Just melt the wax and add the fragrance and coloring that you also got at the craft store. Place a wick in the mold and pour the melted wax in but do not fill all the way. Leave about one half to one inch head space. Make sure your wick is sitting in the middle of the mold up about 1 to 2 inches above the wax. You can tie the wick to a stick or pencil that sits over top the mouth of the mold to hold it up. Let it sit for 12 hours. You can then put it in the refrigerator for ten hours. If you used the Dixie cups or paper milk mold just tear the mold off and you have a candle.

Soap made by our ancestors was dangerous to make because it used some nasty ingredients that could cause poisoning if eaten or could do damage to the skin and lungs because they were so caustic. The used saved cooking fat and mixed it with the ashes from their cooking fires. Today we have easier ways to make soap. The easiest manner is to make it just like you did candles with the melt and pour procedure. Purchase a soap base that also comes in either bar or flakes. Place it in the top of a double boiler and begin the melting process. Once it is melted add the fragrance and color just like you did with the candles. Soap molds are a little different than candle molds. They are generally made of a hard plastic and you just pop the soap out once it dries. They come in different shapes including some whimsical ones like sea shells and fish. Once the soap is poured it needs to dry a few days at room temperature.

These are just the easiest ways to make your own soap and candles. There are many other methods that are a little more difficult to accomplish but yield a great product. Look online for different ways to make candles and soap.

You can find all the instructions to make your own candles fast and easy! All the ingredients you need as well as kits for soap making and candle making that can be made with scents that are uniquely yours!

Fixing Your Debt Situation

Posted by Bob Jones on May 7, 2010 in Uncategorized

You need to differentiate between the various types of financial problems. For example, a financial emergency is when you experience a situation that can render you penniless, homeless or without any important property. You should separate these kinds of emergency from a threatening phone call or a letter from a debt collector.

When experiencing such an emergency, it is vital to act immediately. You have to begin by contacting the creditor. Doing so enables you to work out a temporary solution, which can help you to keep your possessions. However, it does not always work and if it doesn’t, getting in touch with your lawyer to negotiate with the creditor is necessary.

Face up to your Problem: A popular misconception in debt situations is that “the less you know, the less it hurts”. However, you need to learn how to face your debt problems. You need to be able to do this since rebuilding and repairing your credit will not occur, if you do not know exactly where your money goes or where it needs go instead.

Although it is not harmful to overestimate the amount of your debt, it is always necessary to know how much money you really owe. You can do this by taking a look at the bills you have received. If you have thrown out your bills without even opening them, you can still call the company and inquire about them or request duplicates.

Several creditors even use automated reply systems, which can provide a debt balance and information regarding the payments automatically, so you do not even have to speak to anyone. Additionally, information about your account might also be available on your creditors’ web sites. After acquiring the necessary amounts, total them all up, especially those overdue instalment bills.

Options Available for Your Debts: There are several options available when dealing with debts. One is to do nothing. This option is probably the most popular approach used by those who are deeply in debt. Frequently, these people have a very small income and maybe no property and do not usually expect any change in their lifestyle. If you do not anticipate any significant income any time soon, you can consider this option.

However, doing nothing does not really help, so perhaps you could find some money to pay your debts. You can do this by, first, selling a major asset, like a car or a house. This can be a good choice if you can no longer afford your car or house payments. Instead of waiting for a repossession or foreclosure to happen, selling the property is always a better solution.

The proceeds you gain from the sales should be put towards lessening your debt. Moreover, you should remember to pay off the liens placed by the creditors and use anything that is left to pay (something) off your other debts too. However, before taking this step, make sure that you have already worked out a solution to your accommodation or transport requirements.

Another way to help you pay off your debts, is to cut your expenses. This will help you not only in the repayment of your debts but also in negotiating with your creditors. Try to shrink the cost of your food by clipping coupons, purchasing generic brands, buying when there is a sale on or shopping at discount stores.

However, if you cannot reduce your outgoings significantly, you could always borrow money from a tax-deferred account. Tax-deferred retirement accounts, like IRA or 401(k), can be used to help pay off debts by withdrawing money from them before retirement. However, since you may need to pay a penalty or taxes, this must only serve as your last resort.

The Traditional Use Of Dairy Produce: Part 3 - Eggs

Posted by Owen Jones on May 5, 2010 in Uncategorized

Basic Preparation Of Foods: Dairy Produce.

EGGS: Part 1

Eggs can be fresh or dried, the latter being only hens’ eggs without the shell and water. Dried egg should be stored in a cool, dry place - not in the fridge! Store eggs for a few days or a week in a cool place away from strong-smelling foods. An egg stand is ideal for this. If the eggs are dirty, wipe them clean - washing will remove the natural oils which help preserve the eggs.

Pickled Eggs: eggs laid in the Spring keep better than those laid in other seasons. Eggs that can not be cleaned-up, must be refused. Waterglass or the special preparations should be used. if an egg floats to the surface, use it at once. Try to maintain the room temperature between 2 and 8 degrees C and they should remain edible for 6 to 9 months.

Preparing Eggs for Cooking: break each egg into a cup on its own, before adding it to the other ingredients to ensure that it is still fresh. If you wish to separate the white from the yolk, tip the contents of the egg back and forth between the two egg shell halves and the albumen (white) will separate from the yolk. Beat the eggs with a whisk or a fork in an appropriate bowl. Egg whites should be whipped with a knife on a plate - a tiny amount of of salt will help.

Raw eggs used to be prescribed for invalids as they are easily digestible, however, this not advisable these days due to the prevalence of salmonella. One method, given here for the curious was to strain a beaten egg into a mug and slowly add a cup of hot milk (or tea, coffee or lemon water; add sugar to taste. Sherry was also often added.

Cooking Eggs: eggs must be cooked slowly because the albumen cooks at a temperature lower than that of boiling water and becomes ‘tough’ at higher temperatures. Similarly, if you use raw egg to thicken a sauce and the liquid is later allowed to boil, the sauce will ‘curdle’, i.e. the egg will solidify into small specks, spoiling its texture.

Coddling: produces easily digested egg-whites, making it an ideal meal for invalids and children. Lower the eggs into 75mmof boiling water; replace the lid and remove from heat. Let it stand for: 7 mins for medium-, 5 mins for soft- and 20 mins for hard-boiled eggs .

Boiling: lower fresh eggs gently into 3″ (75mm) boiling water with a large spoon. Replace the lid and boil gently for 3-4″ mins for soft-, 4-5 mins for medium- and 10 mins for hard-boiled eggs.

Place in egg eggcups and tap the shell to crack it. Allow the steam to escape, which will prevent the egg further cooking. For sandwiches, salads etc,. boil the egg for 12 mins and plunge into cold water. This allows the shell to be easily removed and prevents a black ring around the yolk.

Where To Find A Carpenter For Sash Window Replacement

Posted by Jonathan Redworth on May 2, 2010 in Crafts

A joiner can assist with your sash window replacement project. A joiner is a master craftsman trained in the old world methods of joining wood and often specializes in building furniture and making custom cabinetry. This art form is sometimes referred to as architectural timbering and it utilizes a variety of styles of joining wood in an ancient art form that fortunately is not lost.

If you have a lot of replacement that needs to be done on your windows and you would like to maintain the integrity of the design of them you could consider looking for someone who is a master cabinet maker. Older homes have unusual shapes and sizes in their windows and these could be replicated by a master carpenter who specializes in cabinets.

Assess your windows and if they look like they are beyond help a master joiner could restore them to their original beauty using modern techniques of incorporating resin-based products and traditional old world joinery.

You could try a carpenter who is a master of decorative arts if your windows are from the Victorian period or another similar highly decorative style that may have a lot of dry rot and in need of retooling. This type of carpenter is a master of detail and just what you will need.

Finding a specialist that knows all about sash window replacement will not only save you money and time but will restore your home to it's original beauty. These specialists know exactly what to do and will in the end save you money by restoring with modern materials in the traditional method of woodworking.

Ask local construction firms for recommendations on who they use to build their custom cabinetry in their higher end projects and you will be sure to find a craftsman who is skilled in joinery. Or try asking an architectural firm if they have recommendations on sash window carpenters, they are sure to.

Take a look at custom cabinet shops for an artisan carpenter as they will often be trained in the craft of sash window building and are very knowledgeable about different styles of windows.

Consider the expertise of using a professional to assist with the removal of old lead based paint, they employ a two step removal system that eliminates health hazards and is dust free.

How To Use Dairy Produce: Part 1 - Milk

Posted by Owen Jones on Apr 27, 2010 in Uncategorized

Basic Preparation Of Foods: Dairy Produce.

These fairly basic tips may seem quite irrelevant to most modern householders who own a refrigerator, but modern technology do make people sloppy and so it is very worth while to know ‘why’ we ought do some things. For example, it is worth remembering these tips when your refrigerator is broken or is so small that it will not hold everything you have, such as when camping or boating or on holiday in some (parts of) countries in the world.

MILK:

Milk has been called ‘nature’s perfect food’, because no other food, taken alone, can support adult life. It is of the first importance for the growth and development of young people, but it must be clean as bacteria also find it very nourishing and quickly multiply in it. If milk is not bought pasteurized, then it should be scalded and quickly cooled before consumption.

How To Scald Milk: Rinse a clean saucepan with cold water, pour in the milk and apply heat until bubbles form around the side of the pan. Maintain it at this temperature, that is, do not let it boil, for 3 minutes. Do not let it overheat, as milk burns very easily. Pour immediately into a clean bottle and put in a basin of cold water and cover with a fine cloth to prevent the ingress of flies and dust.

How To Keep Milk Fresh: If the milk is not be preserved in the receptacles in which it was bought, pour it into a clean receptacle, which has been rinsed with cold water. A warm container will cause the milk to stick to the sides and go off more quickly. You should always keep milk in the coolest place in the larder and always keep it covered. it is worth remembering that draughts occur usually at ground-level and that hot air rises. Never keep milk in an airless cupboard and in hot weather stand the jug in a bowl of water with the cloth covering dangling in the water. The cloth will soak up water, which will evaporate, which uses up heat, ensuring that the bottle remain cool. Keep milk away from strong-smelling foods, as it absorbs smells easily. Never mix new and old milk together.

Sour Milk: When milk comes straight from the cow is slightly alkaline, but as time passes, lactic acid is formed and it becomes what is called ’sour’. Pasteurizing or scalding the milk retards this process. Milk which is ‘on the turn’ can be rejuvenated by boiling with a pinch of bicarbonate of soda to restore its alkalinity. Once the milk has gone too far and has curdled, it can be strained through (cheese) cloth, thus separating the curds from the whey. The curds can be used as a filling for cakes, tarts, scones etc and the whey can be used as the liquid for making scones, cakes and soups etc., as it still has a lot of its goodness.

Evaporated Milk: Evaporated milk is ordinary milk, which has had some of its water content driven off by heat in some form or another before being canned. Once reconstituted by adding water, it will last only a little longer than fresh milk does.

Condensed Milk: This form of milk is simply evaporated milk to which sugar has been added before being placed in its container. Sugar acts as a preservative and will keep the milk for about a week. Do not keep in the tin, but decant it into a jug or bottle.

Dried Milk: Dried milk comes in a variety of forms and notice should be taken of the instructions on the label. Specialized products can be bought for babies, invalids, convalescents and dieters, all of which contain varying amounts and types of added vitamins and minerals. Usually, they are very much lower in fat content than conventional milk.

Wooden Window Renovation And Restoration And Making The Task Simple

Posted by Tayyab Khan on Apr 17, 2010 in Crafts

When the poor weather has caused damage your wood windows, or even the pounding of the heat of the summer sun, you are ready for wooden window restoration.

And the supplies you will need do not cost much. You will soon see that your efforts are paid off with newer looking windows for your home.

Sometimes it is just a matter of neglect from the previous owner or occupant. This is really a shame, because there is not much to maintaining the windows in the first place. So, now you will need to bring them back to life again.

First clean off the wood with a damp rag. You may need to remove the old putty, so use a paint scraper or chisel to do this. Just scrape the putty off, remove any broken glass very carefully, and you may have to sand the bare wood in places, as well. This will make your finishing paint easier and smoother. Then paint primer will need to be put on the bare wood to hold your new putty more securely and for a longer time. Either water based primer or oil based is fine.

After your glass is measured, add about one-eight of an inch to the width and the length of it to provide for clearance. The glass is then ordered, and you will find it in your neighborhood home and building center.

When the primer is dry, install the glass. Start with a bead of putty, very thin in the groove where the glass will be. Then install it. You should use glazing points, strategically placed a couple of inches from the corners and on all sides, for more strength. Then putty around the glass and wood and press down to smooth it out neatly. Scrape off any excess. Now set the window aside for a couple of days to let the putty dry. Next it is time to tape the window glass to protect it from getting paint on it, and paint the wood of the window. And you are done.

That is it. You are finished. And that was not such a tedious job, after all. Now if you maintain your windows, you will no longer need wooden window restoration in the future, or at least not for a long time.
