Fun Activities For Children Indoor

Posted by Kelly West on Aug 6, 2010 in games

Kids love to play out and that is why they love the spring and summer but unfortunately these months are not here forever. As sure as night follows day there are going to be some days when it inevitably rains and this often depresses the kids as they will have to stay inside all day.

But just because it is raining does not mean that the kids cannot have fun. Why not all jump into the car and have a drive down to the local library. You could find lots of great books that the children can read or you may also find some materials for doing art projects.

Another thing that can often keep the kids entertained for long periods of time is the good old scrapbook.

This can also be a great time for your family to enjoy some bonding sessions by putting on a home movie. If this does not appeal to the kids then get out their favorite movie and all sit down to watch it with some snacks and popcorn and make a day of it.

It can be worse when school is out or even at the weekends so why not consider letting the kids have a dress up tea party. They may also like the idea of baking and making cookies for the tea party.

Board games are always a firm favorite wit kids too when they have to stay indoors because of the weather. They always enjoy challenging the adults at games such as dominoes, cards, scrabble and the like.

If you have exhausted all of these options then it may be time for the kids to make up other suggestions for playing in the house. This can be done by individually writing down suggestions on pieces of paper and placing them in a box or hat. Then you just choose one of these suggestions at random and play that suggestion.

By keeping your kids busy on the days when it rains it can make them almost look forward to the rainy days in the future.

Aside from parenting, this author also frequently shares writing regarding knee support pillow and bombe chests.

Issues You Have To Know About Speed Reading Exercises

Posted by John Laing on Jul 31, 2010 in books

Speed reading exercises have for a goal to increase the speed of reading without adversely changing the memory of understanding of the text. There are numerous ways of speed reading but the main idea is to maintain a balance between comprehension and the speed of reading. It must be noted that this process requires a lot of practice.

There exists a few different ways to speed read like not pronouncing all of the words, speeding up word recognition so that focus on every individual letter is not necessary and generally scanning over the text. Different ways will come naturally to different people and these will reveal themselves with time and practice. As a general idea, getting your eyes to accelerate their movement and speeding up word recognition.

Skimming is the process by which a reader visually searches through the text for clues to the meaning of the article. Generally, this is not the best method for dense informational texts because comprehension rate is usually lower. On the other hand, it allows for a quick overview of the text and its essential meaning.

Another way to better reading speed is meta guiding and this method is very popular and widely taught. This method includes making the eyes follow a pointer in the form of a finger or pen along the following of text. This is a way to accelerate eye coordination and subduing subvocalization.

A basic speed reading exercise consists of using your finger to pace yourself through a text and accelerate the rate at which you would normally move your eyes across a line. Moving your finger gradually faster will force your eyes to recognize words quickly and hence accelerate your speed of reading.

A second exercise one may want to try when attempting to learn speed reading skills is to skim over the text and search for key words relating to the meaning of each sentence. This pertains to block reading and can easily be replicated in other more complex exercises.

This third exercise needs a little bit of preparation time and some index cards. Blocks of words, phrases or sentence fragments will need to be written on the index cards. The exercise itself consists of reading what is written on the index cards instead of reading an integral text. During a few minutes, one must quickly scroll through the index cards while recognizing the set of words that are on every card. In practicality, this increases the recognition of words and accelerates the speed of reading fragments of sentences.

In general, in order for speed reading exercises to be effective, some time must be invested. A rule of thumb is that it is recommended to have a good level of energy and have a good level of concentration to practice these exercises. To see worth while results, it takes time and lots of practice. Reading really fast is possible all the while keeping a good comprehension and retention of what is being read.

Speed reading is a great skill to have in the academic and professional worlds. It is rather easy to learn this skill and doesn’t require a financial investment. All that is necessary are speed reading exercises, a little patience and some determination.

The Benefits Of Educational Toys Last A Lifetime

Posted by Adriana Noton on Apr 22, 2010 in games

Jean Piaget was a 20th century educational theorist and researcher who has had a significant impact on the way we understand children. He once said that “play is the work of childhood.” He developed the idea that children pass through four distinct stages as they grow from infants into adults. We will discuss these stages and the overall benefits of educational toys in this article.

Sensorimotor

The sensorimotor stage occurs from birth through the age of two years. The child progresses from the simple reflexes of a newborn, such as rooting and sucking, to the ability to think symbolically and object permanence. Toys offered during this time should be appropriate to the substage that the child is in.

In the early part of the sensorimotor stage, the young baby needs very simple toys that are big enough so that the child does not choke on them. At this age, everything goes into the child’s mouth. The type of toy progresses to those that have predictable and easily reproducible results. Over time, the toys will become more complex and will involve toys that the child can pull, push, manipulate and experiment on with his or her senses.

Preoperational

Children progress through the preoperational stage from ages two through seven. This is the age of magical thinking and the mastery of motor skills. Children of this age do not think logically. Educational toys suitable for this stage include blocks, dolls, dress ups and other things that stimulate the imagination. Puzzles, coloring, reading and simple math games are also appropriate for children of this stage.

The Concrete Operational Stage

From ages seven years through 12 years old, children pass through the concrete operational stage. They can use simple logic, but their thinking is still very concrete. Toys that foster imagination, work to develop critical thinking skills, such as puzzles, chess or other games, as well as toys that enhance academic skills are good choices for this age group.

Formal Operational

Throughout the teen years and into adulthood, the child’s ability to think abstractly develops. Less time is spent on playing with toys and more time is devoted to specific hobbies and interests, as well as socializing and friends. Hobbies and other interests should be encouraged by providing the child with experiential activities and opportunities to include his or her friends, when possible.

Short- And Long-Term Effects

Children who have been provided with educational toys continue to reap the benefits of them well into their twenties. IQ test scores are also higher (by as much as 50 points) in children who have been provided educational toys. There are many benefits of educational toys. The child learns interpersonal skills, academic, motor and thinking skills all while having a good time. Every child deserves the advantages of playing with educational toys.

Offering the highest quality of educational toys for over 15 years, this family owned business is dedicated to delivering joy and excitement into your children’s upbringings. A wide range of safe and durable products is available, including baby toys and wooden toys.

Great Tips For Writers

Posted by Fea L. Brent on Apr 21, 2010 in books

1. Start Writing

Okay, so this tip is obvious. For some, it’s a question of what to write about, for others how to write. Write how and what you want. What kind of books do you like to read? Fiction, Mystery, science fiction, how to books? How about articles, reports, maybe you’re interested in journalism. Whatever the case may be, to get your creative juices flowing, start writing! Don’t worry about how it sounds, grammar or other mistakes, you can go back to fix these.

2. Join online and offline groups/message boards and chats

If you already know what you want to write about, consider joining writer groups at your local library, or online groups, along with message boards and chats. It’s a great way to network with other writers and published authors. It’s also a good place to share your work and receive feedback. Many places online are free to join, some require a membership which usually consist of a user name, e-mail address and password for your user name. Some request more information such as a name, address and sometimes phone number.

3. The Library

You’ve probably heard about some books that writers refer to, this could be writer markets, e-book publishing, self publishing and generally how to improve your writing. Bu what do you do when you can’t afford to buy these books from your local bookstore or online? A trip to your library is the key. Many libraries carry writer resource books, which if you have a library card, are free. If you’re living out of the area, the library may require a fee for membership. The book you’re looking for may not always be at your local library, however libraries borrow from other libraries in and out of state. The method of receiving outside books is called Inter-Library Loan. Later on, if you find the book to be a great resource, you may be able to purchase a used copy online.

4. Researching

The Internet is also another good resource for information. Keep in mind that not every resource you find online is going to be an honest good resource. It will take time to sort out which websites are useful. Most information is free, so you can sit back and research in the comfort of your home. If you don’t have a computer with Internet access, check your local library and see if you can use one of theirs.

5. Workshops

Workshops taught by experts is a great way to learn from the professionals, but only if you can afford it! Make sure the topic of the workshop is based around your interest. For instance, if you love fiction..it wouldn’t be a good idea to go to a workshop based only on non-fiction. It’s a good idea to register early to ensure a spot at the event. Bring a new legal pad, plus a few writing tools to take notes.

6. Contents

After writing a while, you may want to enter contents. Some require an entry fee. I suggest staying away from the entry fee contents until you’ve entered some other free ones. That way you can get a feel for how contests work. Spend some time writing and re-writing your entries. If you’ve written your entry in 5 or so minutes, th judges will notice it immediately. You wouldn’t want a reputation for sloppy work.

1. Develop Motor Skills: While toddlers are learning, progressing and becoming more mobile, it is extremely important to help them develop their fine motor skills. A great way to do this is by putting together jigsaw puzzles. Having to grasp small objects and manipulate them into the right spot can help your toddler increase these skills very quickly.

3. Boosts Hand Eye Coordination: Coordinating your eyes and hands together and guiding your hands to do what your eyes are seeing is an important skill. When toddlers use jigsaw puzzles, they are required to place a puzzle piece in an exact location, either by changing the piece’s direction or by matching colors and shapes, this movement will help to boost their hand eye coordination significantly which makes jigsaw puzzles one of the best toys for toddlers.

Do You Need A Kindle 2? Yes.

Posted by Joseph W. Risinko on Mar 31, 2009 in books
by Joseph W. Risinko

The Kindle 2 includes a built-in basic web browser to read text-centric web sites and has a built-in dictionary. Thanks to the expanded battery life of the Kindle 2, you are able to read for up to two weeks with the wireless access turned off, or up to four days with it turned on. The Kindle 2 has the capacity to hold over 1,500 books, including many best-sellers that can be downloaded for less than ten dollars each.

The redesigned Kindle 2 ebook reader got favorable reviews at the launch in New York City. [1] The connectivity needed to download books and browsing certain other sites is free of charge: The Kindle Store enables you to download, display and use on your Device a variety of digitized electronic content, such as books, subscriptions to magazines, newspapers, journals and other periodicals, blogs, RSS feeds, and other digital content. With the new Text-to-Speech feature, Kindle 2 can read every book, blog, magazine, and newspaper out loud to you.

Personally, I like the size of the reader, but would consider jumping up to a larger screen if the footprint isn’t too big. If you’re an avid reader such as myself, buy one and you’re hooked. I was a sceptic about any ebook reader, but since purchasing my Kindle last year, I can’t imagine my reading life without it.

With Kindle 2 Amazon kept everything readers love about the original Kindle”the convenience of reading what you want, when you want it, the immediacy of getting a book wirelessly delivered in less than 60 seconds, and Kindle 2s ability to disappear in your hands so you can get lost in the authors words. The Kindle 2 actually feels comfortable in my hand now”unlike the original Kindle which is much to angular and sharp-edged to be comfortable after an hour of reading. You will be able to eat with both hands while reading your current read.

Like some other electronic paper products, the Kindle 2 uses “e-ink” technology, which serves to make the letters and words on the screen look more printlike in their appearance. A lot of people, when they first see the screen, are genuinely impressed. The 600-by-800-resolution screen is the same size, measuring 6 inches; but now, packing the latest E-Ink technology, it gives you 16 shades of gray versus the 4 shades available on the original Kindle.

Amazon pays for Kindles wireless connectivity so you wont see a monthly wireless bill. Especially with the wireless capability to get what I want on demand. With wireless off, it can go two weeks without recharging.

My Predictions/Wishes:Kindle as a standard for newspaper/magazine delivery: I think Amazon will either buy a newspaper or a big Newspaper publisher will invest heavily in Kindle or their own ebook readers. I buy all my books on amazon anyways so the kindle 2 is a logical method of ebook delivery. I was able to check my Yahoo email, Twitter and Facebook easily.

Kindle 2 includes a 250,000-word dictionary onboard, offering instant definition of a highlighted term. Kindle 2 uses the same wireless network as the original Kindle ? Amazon Whispernet. Kindle 2 will also sync with a range of mobile devices in the future, Amazon said.
