The most attractive aspect of Porsche’s new four-door Panamera, which we plugged in our Fall Trend Reports , may well be a feature that debuted in the Carrera last fall: the seven-speed marvel of modern engineering called the PDK transmission. A recent opportunity to try out the PDK on a track (though not, sadly, in a Panamera) left me mighty impressed. Thanks to its race-derived double clutch—which basically ensures that the next gear is always spooled up and ready to kick in—shifting was lightning-fast, yet butter-smooth.

Sustainable this, organic that—it’s all good karma, but it can make for some mediocre merch. Fortunately, that’s not the case with the debut sunglasses from Portland-based Shwood

The British designer Nigel Cabourn has been on the scene since the seventies, but in recent years, his meticulously detailed, more-English-than-the-English goods have been easier to find in Japan—where he’s got an avid following and a recently opened store—than on our shores. A vote of confidence from Opening Ceremony may be enough to change that. A few of Cabourn’s mountaineering-inspired pieces are now in at OC, though “inspired” is a pretty weak word for it—sartorial Method acting comes closer to the truth

The leaves are turning, the days are getting shorter, there’s an invigorating zip in the air: No question about it, it’s fall—or, as we prefer to call it around these parts, whisky season. Here to kick it off in style is the newest offering from The Balvenie, one of the subtlest malts of the Speyside region (basically the whisky capital of Scotland)

One guy’s last word—my first. The air around here is starting to get chilly, and when a colleague asked what was the first thing I’d be buying for fall (well, aside from the Dries suit I picked up last month), I told him it was a no-brainer: lip balm

We’re not sure when he finds time to do it—what with a men’s line, a women’s line, a fur line, and two diffusion lines—but somehow Rick Owens also designs furniture.

We liked what we saw of the new Thorocraft footwear line that’s been making the blog rounds this morning, so we called over to designer Alex James to hear some more about his fledgling line. His designs put new twists on standard shapes: a desert boot with slit detail; a more traditional ankle boot in bright cherry leather; and our favorite, the woven Ross lace-up (above), which recalls the Jeffrey Campbell huaraches we spotted at Loden Dager’s Spring show . James doesn’t have formal cobbler’s training but created his line after studying shoemaking during an extended stay in Vietnam, where it’s still produced.
