The Sliky: How Did It Get Started?

Since the arrival of the age of factories, we have relied on springs to do jobs that were important but very boring. During the dark days of World War II, fortunately, a mechanical engineer earning a living at a Philadelphia shipyard noticed a spring acting in a very odd way. On account of this, he understood that maybe springs could be fun - and profitable.

That mechanical engineer was known as Richard James, and he observed spring get knocked off of a shelf and down to the floor. The bit that got his attention was the acrobatic style in which the spring, in lieu of simply plopping on the floor, “stepped” in a sequence of arcs off of a shelf, to a bunch of books, then a tabletop, and after that to the floor, where it gathered itself and stood upright.

Stimulated by this particularly animated spring, James ran tests with several kinds of steel and different tensions, and eventually designed a spring which can “walk” down a ramp.
